Microchip Yoga

Coming soon to a computer… IN you! Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed silicon microchips that you can bend and stretch. The natural tendency of silicon is to break when bent. These new chips get around this by arranging microscopic slices of silicon in an accordion-like pattern on pre-stretched rubber. One application being researched is the creation of a sheet of sensors that could monitor the brain activity of epileptics by sitting on the brain itself. With such flexibility the possible uses are endless.
